What is the purpose of a music video?

• Promotes the song 
• Changes image of an artist (An example of this would be Christina Aguilera who destroyed the image from her being this young kid who was a part of the micky mouse club to becoming this woman who does anything and not so innocent, with her song Dirrty)

• Advertisement/ Product placement (Sometimes includes movie clips, headphones [Beats by dre], Phones etc)

• Draws attention to the song
• appeals to a visual audience 
• Expresses an individual emotion (Sinead O'Connor - Nothing compares 2U, Eminem - Stan) 

• Tells a story (Bronski Beat - Small town boy, Queen - I want to break free, )

• Market an image ( Christina Aguilara - Dirrty, Madonna)
• Promotes the artist / single/ album (Ah-Ha - Take on Me)

• Persuades the audience to buy - CD/download 
• Raises the audience or profile of the artist/ group (So Solid Crew - 21 seconds)

• To make an artist statement  (Talking Heads- once in a lifetime)
