Information About Copyright

Copyright is a legal concept in which the person with original work has the rights to it. Generally, it is "the right to copy", but also gives the copyright holder the right to be credited for the work, to determine who may adapt the work to other forms, who may perform the work, who may financially benefit from it, and other related rights (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright).

Preliminary Exercise

The preliminary exercises involved lip syncing to a song. We picked a location which would be suitable for the song. The song that we had to lip sync to was Elton John - Dong go Breaking my heart. The lyrics of the song were:

Don't go breaking my heart
I couldn't if I tried
Honey if I get restless
Baby you're not that kind

Don't go breaking my heart
You take the weight off me
Honey when you knock on my door
I gave you my key

Nobody knows it
When I was down
I was your clown
Nobody knows it
Right from the start
I gave you my heart
I gave you my heart

In order to get perfect lip syncing we had to sing out loud and to do about 2-5 takes. If we mouthed out the lyrics it we would not be as effective.

Success Criteria

How might we measure the success criteria of a music promo video?
  • Views on youtube
  • Sales Word of mouth
  • Newspaper - articles/ TV reports
  • How many times its been shown on TV
  • Amount of publicity ( Rebecca Black - Friday)
  • Downloads (Legal/ illegal)
  • Chart success
  • Trending topic on Twitter/ Facebook/ Myspace
  • It is worth nothing how there has been a massive switch in the importance of youtube from television channels such as MTV.
  • Most viewing of massive videos now appears to be online
  • VMA (Video Music Awards)

Purpose of a Music Video

What is the purpose of a music video?
  • Promotes the song
  • Changes image of an artist (An example of this would be Christina Aguilera who destroyed the image from her being this young kid who was a part of the micky mouse club to becoming this woman who does anything and not so innocent, with her song Dirrty)
  • Advertisement/ Product placement (Sometimes includes movie clips, headphones [Beats by dre], Phones etc)
  • Draws attention to the song
  • appeals to a visual audience
  • Expresses an individual emotion (Sinead O'Connor - Nothing compares 2U, Eminem - Stan)

  • Tells a story (Bronski Beat - Small town boy, Queen - I want to break free, )

  • Market an image ( Christina Aguilara - Dirrty, Madonna)
  • Promotes the artist / single/ album (Ah-Ha - Take on Me)
  • Persuades the audience to buy - CD/download
  • Raises the audience or profile of the artist/ group (So Solid Crew - 21 seconds)
  • To make an artist statement  (Talking Heads- once in a lifetime)

Editing to the Beat

Editing to the beat is one of the things in which makes a music video interesting and keeps it fresh. Looking at the Rihanna 'Don't stop the music' video we could see that the beginning section especially was well edited and did go with the beat of the song which is essential.

This task was to see if we could take a few clips provided and to try and fit it in with the beat.

Here is my completed video for editing to the beat task.

Channel 4 - 100 Greatest Music Videos Pt2.

#4. Queen/ Bohemian Rhapsody/ 1975

This music video was the start of the video age. On the top of the pops if you had the no. 1 single you would have to appear on top of the pops each time. Now queen didn't want to keep appearing on top of the pops as they were no.1 for a number of weeks so that produced a music video which was creative in the sense that it had all four members of queen, and they were singing the song. The effects included them normally then you see multiple copies of them. It amazed people as this was the first time it was done.

#3. A-ha/ Take on Me/ 1985

The song by a-ha take on me was released weeks before the video came out. This song was a huge hit so they decided to make a video for it. This was an expensive video as it was done partly in animaiton. This also amazed people when you see the mixture of animation and real life together. There was one segment where we see the human woman and the animated a-ha leader then the camera changes position and then we see the opposite (Animated woman and the real life man) this did throw people and it amazed them. They were confused with how they did this. This was one of the complex things to do, up till today it still amazes people.

#2. Peter Gabriel/ Sledgehammer/ 1986

This was another animation video but a still animation video. This video took a long time because a lot of things were done and they had to be moved little at a time to create the effect of it moving by itself.

#1. Michael Jackson/ Thriller/ 1983

Michael Jackson thriller was one of the best yet most expensive video ever made. The horror based music video made it one of the best piece of work ever made. Channel 4 had this policy in which you could not watch anything scary until after 9, The airing of the music video was done on a friday at midnight. The viewing on that day was huge. Everyone stayed up just to watch that music video. In the 1980s there were only 4 channels. If you had missed the music video it would have been replayed at a later point the following week. This was why the people watched it at once. The idea from this video came from the movie, american warewolf. Michael was always interested in metamorphosis and transformation so he implemented it on his video.

Channel 4 - 100 Greatest Music Videos

Top 10

#10. Navana/ Smells like teen spirit/ 1991

This music video was was great because it captured a moment. The video showed a group of teens basically trashing the video set. The band (narvana) and the music director did not get a long which does reflect in the video. At the same time making it a great video.

#9. Madonna/ Vogue/ 1990

This music video was about a dance which was used instead to settle an argument or a feud. This was a new craze which was done in clubs and parties.

#8. Verve/ Bittersweet symphony/ 1997

This music video was all about a northern lad who comes down to the south and he is acting like a tough guy. Attitude is represented in this music video. It shows that he doesn't really care about anyone as he is in the centre of the shot barging everyone in his way as to say he should have full authority.

#6. Michael Jackson/ Billie Jean/ 1983

Michael Jackson Billie Jean music video was one of the most spectacular music video in a sense that Michael Jackson had to learn a new dance on the same day of the recording. The music video capture the idea of a magical experience. Michael Jackson was always a fan of magic, so implementing that with this video gave it a sense of excellent. This was one of Michaels first video and being black it pushed boundaries trying to get on MTV, which eventually it did.

#5. Madonna/ Like a Prayer/ 1989

This video was one of the most controversial videos at the time. The video had some biblical references in it that did shock people. The 'Like a prayer' video did also have some racial aspect to it. The whole idea is that Madonna sees a person who has committed a murder who happens to be white and we see a black man going to help the woman murdered but gets caught. Madonna is threatened by the murderer, but in the end confesses to release the black man who is in prison which is represented as a church also.

    My Favourite Music Videos

    Snoop Dogg - Sexual Seduction

The reason this is one of my favourite videos is because the visual effects in the clip. It has a 80/ 90s feel to it. Although the effects of the clip seem old and not up to date, the old classic feel of the music comes across as to make people reflect back and reminise to when the music videos were like this. More for the older generation.

    R. Kelly - The Worlds Greatest

    R. Kelly the worlds greatest, is one of the best videos. They took Muhammed Ali winning the championship as the visual idea. This great song attaching to the visual effects makes this a good song. From this we could see that the Visual should tie in with the music that i chose.

    J. Cole - Work Out

Being a basketball fanatic the summer vibe of this video links in with me. Playing basketball with my basketball school team in the summer was one of the best times in life seeing this video and seeing a group of basketball players takes me back to this and remembering the fun times of summer. Typically a rap video has cars, girls etc. Although the rap video has girls but the idea behind this video was to make it seem fun, thats why the basketball player were playing in the summer, and to end the day of having fun you have even more fun with the party afterwords.
